About Geospatial Analytics for Risk and Resilience

ANOFA | Smart Geospatial Thinking

ANOFA is a start-up company founded in 2023 at the Bilişim Vadisi Technology Development Zone by Dr. Emin Y. Menteşe and Dr. Erdem Özer, who together bring over 15 years of experience in disaster risk reduction, exposure & impact modelling, geospatial data analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) & remote sensing applications and the development of web-based decision-support tools.

ANOFA has its roots in Tomorrow’s Cities, a 5-year project (2019-2024) funded by UK Research and Innovation – Global Challenges Research Fund (UKRI-GCRF), which focuses on reducing disaster risk in future cities for the urban poor.

ANOFA’s main mission is to harness the power of GIS, remote sensing and advanced software development to tackle complex challenges in disaster risk reduction, urban planning and environmental management.

Emin works on different aspects of disaster risk reduction and urban resilience with an interdisciplinary perspective. As a geomatics engineer and an urban planner, with expertise in the field of GIS, one of his core interests is developing geospatial solutions that address different components of disaster risk such as modelling exposure, visualising impacts and web-based tools to analyse disaster risk.

He has been involved in disaster related studies since 2007, working in both academic (Istanbul Technical University and Boğaziçi University) and public sectors (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality), nearly for 17 years, on topics such as landslide early warning, hazard mapping, earthquake risk assessment, coping capacity analysis, tsunami risk assessment and exposure modeling.

Erdem’s expertise focuses on analysing aerial & satellite imagery to assess LULC changes and developing geospatial models to predict outcomes or simulate scenarios based on spatial data and patterns. As a geomatics engineer, his core interest is utilising geospatial solutions to assess and address complex environmental, urban and resource management challenges through advanced RS, GIS and data analytics techniques.

He has been involved in geospatial technology development since 2007, working in both academic (project staff at Istanbul Technical University, research assistant at Hacettepe University and researcher at Boğaziçi University) and public sector (engineer at different departments of T.R. MoEUCC) where he collaborated on many environmental & informatics projects.
